The father of detained underworld figure Nadun Chinthaka Wickramaratne, alias “Harak Kata”, has lodged a complaint with the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL), alleging a plot to assassinate his son while in custody.
In a letter to the HRCSL Secretary, Nelson Mervyn Wickramaratne said his son was being held at a 10-cell detention facility at the Welisara Navy Camp alongside three other alleged underworld figures — Kehelbaddara Padme, Bacco Saman and Panadura Nilanga.
He alleged that the three had previously been accused of attempting to assassinate his son within court premises.
Wickramaratne also denied recent media reports of a clash between his son and Padme on September 22, claiming that the reports were being used to facilitate an attack on his son.
He said his son was suffering from a knee injury, used crutches and was being held under conditions that had adversely affected his health.
The complaint also alleged that his son faced threats after being prepared to disclose information concerning alleged corruption involving senior police officers. These allegations have not been independently established.
Wickramaratne further claimed that despite more than 36 months in detention and extensive interrogation by the CID and TID, no new cases relating to drug trafficking or major crimes had been filed against his son, apart from a 2018 drug case involving 12 grammes.
He urged the HRCSL to intervene immediately to safeguard his son’s right to life and ensure due process.
