Emerging javelin thrower Themiya Thabrew heads to the World Athletics Under-20 Championships carrying expectations similar to those that surrounded Rumesh Tharanga four years ago as the global showpiece gets underway at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, USA, on Wednesday.
Commonwealth Games 2026 gold medallist Tharanga travelled to the 2022 World Under-20 Championships in Cali ranked among the top 40 in the age category at the time. He produced a throw of 69.98 metres to finish an impressive seventh against the world’s best young athletes in 2022.
Now it is Thabrew’s turn to test himself on the biggest junior stage. The Lyceum International School, Wattala athlete enters the championships with a personal best of 69.85 metres, achieved in June, which currently ranks as the 43rd best Under-20 performance in the world this year. With a preparation comparable to Tharanga’s before Cali, Thabrew will be looking to challenge for a place among the leading finalists.
However highjumper Tharusha Mendis carries more expectations on his shoulders than any others as the highest ranked among the men’s athletes fielded by Sri Lanka. His 2.23 metres feat achieved in February is listed as the sixth best feat in the world in his age category this year.

Sri Lanka field one of its stronger team in history at the World Athletics Under-20 Championships, with the young squad hoping to make its mark against the world’s best emerging athletes in Eugene.
In the women’s category, Asian Junior Champion Tharushi Abhisheka is the top athlete vying for honours. Dharmapala College Pannipitiya sprinter Dilanma Ransini (200m) and Lyceum International sprinter Risansa Hirupama (200m) are the others.
