El Niño conditions may be contributing to a decline in fish catches in the seas around the country, prompting the Ministry of Fisheries to seek a scientific assessment of fish stocks from the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA).
Deputy Minister of Fisheries Rathna Gamage said fishermen had reported a decline in their catches, raising concerns over the possible impact of changing ocean conditions on fish populations.
He said NARA had been requested to prepare a detailed report on the status of fish stocks in the Sea of Sri Lanka and assess the potential impact of El Niño conditions on fish populations and fishing yields.
The Deputy Minister said the Government would take necessary measures concerning fishing activities and the management of fish stocks based on the recommendations of the scientific assessment.
He said that the report is expected to provide authorities with a clearer picture of the factors behind the decline in catches and help determine appropriate measures to protect fish stocks while safeguarding the livelihoods of fishermen.
