Demand for drug rehabilitation services had increased amid signs of a shortage of illicit drugs, National Dangerous Drugs Control Board (NDDCB) Director of Treatment and Rehabilitation, U.G. Shantha Gamage said on Saturday.
Speaking at a press briefing in Colombo on the progress of the government’s “Ratama Ekata”drug eradication programme, Gamage said authorities had observed a decline in the availability of illicit drugs in society.
He said the situation had coincided with an increase in the number of drug users seeking treatment and rehabilitation.
The Cabinet approved the establishment of six short-term treatment and rehabilitation centres in April after authorities found that existing residential facilities were inadequate to meet the growing demand for voluntary treatment.
The government is also continuing efforts to expand rehabilitation facilities under its national anti-drug programme.
