Dharshana produces seasonal best, schoolboy stuns Kalinga

103 National Athletics Championship

Aruna Dharshana returned to form with a sub 46 seconds feat, emerging sprinter Kalhara Idupa turned tables on veteran Kalinga Kumarage as the men’s 400 metres produced a thrilling climax on the final day of the 103rd National Athletics Championship at Diyagama on Sunday.

Dharshana, who was nursing an injury following the Asian Athletics Championship delivered a superb performance to clinch the men’s 400 metres title with a seasonal best feat. The Army sprinter clocked 45.91 seconds, the first time he clocked sub 46 seconds this season.

Arguably, the day’s most stunning performance too was witnessed in the men’s 400metres as 19-year-old Kalhara Idupa turned tables on veteran Kumarage to win the silver medal. He had clocked sub 46 seconds at the same venue last month and an impressive performance was on the cards. Kumarage settled for bronze with a time of 46.56 secs.
