Teachers to protest opposite education offices today

Teachers are scheduled to stage a protest after school hours today opposite the zonal education offices over several demands, including the provision of the promised remaining salary, Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU) General Secretary Joseph Stalin has said.

Stalin said that the teachers assigned for paper marking duties too would join the trade union action after 1 pm.

He said that their main demand was that the government grant the remaining two-thirds of the salary increment for principals and teachers.

Stalin said that the Education Ministry should allocate Rs. 46 billion for the purpose and insisted that the funds be disbursed this year itself.

“We have also demanded that the fee paid for paper marking be increased. The Ministry appointed a committee last year to look into this matter. However the fee has not yet been increased,” Stalin said.
