Clinics conducted by medical specialists at the Hambantota District General Hospital will be closed down soon due to a serious shortage of doctors, according to sources.The hospital only has two general surgeons and they, too, would leave the hospital soon, sources said
“Moreover, there are two anesthesiologists in the hospital and one of them is leaving soon. We need six doctors for the Pediatric intensive care unit, but there are only two. Therefore, the Pediatric intensive care unit is operating with great difficulty,” a hosptial official said.
Overall, 70 percent of specialist doctors at the Hambantota Hospital have left. Doctors claim that there are no anesthesiologists at the Debarawewa and Embilipitiya hospitals as well.The Hambantota hospital also faces a shortage of 70 medicines and some of these drugs are not even available in the pharmacies in the area.
