The Northern and Eastern provinces are set to experience heavy rainfall again from today (10), according to the Meteorology Department.
This situation has been attributed to a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal. The North-Eastern monsoon is also expected to establish itself in the coming days.
Meteorologist Udeni Weerasinghe said the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, along with the Galle, Matara, Kandy, and Nuwara Eliya districts, were likely to experience heavy showers during the evening or night. “Rainfall in these areas may sometimes exceed 75 millimetres,” she said.
Fishermen have been advised to remain vigilant.
Over 390,000 acres of paddy fields were destroyed during the recent heavy rains and it is expected that the coming maha season harvest would be reduced by 10 percent of the expected output.
Meanwhile, Agriculture and Livestock Deputy Minister Namal Karunaratne announced that farmers will receive 100,000 rupees as compensation per hectare for total crop losses caused by the recent floods. A billion rupees had been allocated.
