Air quality measurement centres to be increased to 100 in next six months

The Ministry of Transport, the National Building Research Organization (NBRO), and the Central Environment Authority (CEA) are working together to increase the number of air quality measurement centres to 100 within the next six months.

State Minister for Transport Lasantha Alagiyawanna, addressing a press conference at the Presidential Media Centre (PMC), said there were rising concerns about the air quality in certain areas of the country.

“The government will place this collated data on the internet, allowing citizens to access air quality conditions online from anywhere in the world.

“This will enable citizens to take necessary precautionary measures if the air quality deteriorates,” he said.

The State Minister added that they ere also taking steps to increase the convenience of motorists in the country.

As part of the endeavour, motorists would be able to purchase vehicle insurance, drivers’ licenses and vehicle emission certificates at the same place in the coming two months, he said, adding that they also had a plan to reduce traffic accidents by providing policemen with equipment to detect road rule violators.

A database with traffic information, too, would be established to make optimal decisions on minimizing traffic accidents, the State Minister said.
