About 50 acres of a forest reserve were destroyed by fires in Bibile and on the Yudaganawa hills on Tuesday night.
The fires had erupted at Arangala in the Bibile-Dorapothakanda mountain range and in the Yudaganawa-Puhulgala hills, the Disaster Management Unit (DMU) Deputy Director A.H. Ravindra Kumar said.
The blaze in Arangala spread across a significant portion of the protected forest. However, it was brought under control.
The Yudaganawa-Puhulgala fire has destroyed nearly 50 acres of reserve forest.The Bibile-Dorapothakanda area, under the Department of Forest Conservation encompass several critical water catchment zones supplying the region.
