Sri Lanka Athletics is expecting its affiliates to submit reports of their annual activities by 10.00 am today to determine the eleligible clubs qualified to vote at the upcoming Annual General Meeting at which -a new president and office bearers are set to be elected.
According to the new sports regulations, clubs that have not conducted their annual championships, coaching or technical official workshops, fielded athletes for major championships including the National Championship and the Junior National Championship will risk their right to vote at the AGM. According to Sri Lanka Athletics each of the 39 affiliated clubs have three votes each.
The track and field governing body infomed its affiliates about the new regulations which they addopted months ago. But some of the clubs had not fulfilled the obligations. A senior official said that the time given to fulfil obligations will expire at 10.00 am today(11).
According to new regulations a number of incumbent officials including the President of the Association, Gen. Palitha Fernando will not be elegible for re-election. The new regulations prevent him from contesting for a top post as he has held the office for ‘more than eight years. The new regulations also prevents officials who had held a position in the executive committee for more than 12 years from contesting.
With new regulations coming in to effect, some of the sports associations have seen nearly half of their affiliated clubs become ineligible to vote at the AGMs. “Of the 43 weightlifting clubs, more than half have become ineligible to vote,” said a source close to weightlifting.
There are 39 clubs affiliated to the track and field governing body. They are Army SC, Navy SC, Air Force SC, Universities SC, Sri Lanka Schools Athletics Association, Sri Lak SC, CT & FC, Ace Athletic Club, Track Masters, Lanka Lions, Masters Athletics Association of Sri Lanka, Government Services SC, Nationalized Services SC, Mercantile Athletics Association and the 25 District Clubs.
Sri Lanka Athletics appointed a three member election committee headed by Retired High Court Judg Wimal Nambuwasam, at the Special General Meeting held on June 30. The other members in the committee are K.M.G.B. Kulathunga (Retired High Court Judg) and R.M.R.B. Wickramasinghe (Retired Asst. Director of Sports).
