Amid those developments both indices moved upwards. The All Share Price Index went up by 76.79 points while the S and P SL20 rose by 42.2 points.

Turnover stood at Rs 1.7 billion with two crossings. Those crossings were reported in Commercial Bank, which crossed 650,000 shares to the tune of Rs 95.5 million and Sampath Bank 500,000 shares crossed to the tune of Rs 61 million; its shares traded at Rs 122.

In the retail market top six companies that mainly contributed to the turnover were; Sampath Bank Rs 214 million (1.9 million shares traded), HNB Rs 168 million (521,000 shares traded), Hemas Holdings Rs 76.7 million (650,000 shares traded), JKH Rs 75.6 million (3.5 million shares traded), Dialog Rs 64.1 million (447,000 shares traded) and HNTB Rs 69.9 million (316,000 shares traded). Trump to order English as official US language

Donald Trump will sign an executive order on today [28] making English the official language of the United States, according to White House officials, and scrapping requirements that federal agencies provide language services to non-English speakers.

The US has never had an official language in the nearly 250 years since the country was founded.

The order is intended to improve government efficiency and promote national unity, according to White House officials.

Nearly 68 million of the country’s 340 million residents speak a language other than English, according to the US Census Bureau, which includes more than 160 Native American tongues.

Friday’s executive order will roll back a policy from 2000 signed by former President Bill Clinton requiring that government agencies and federal funding recipients “ensure that their programs and activities normally provided in English are accessible to LEP (low-English proficiency) persons”.

Agencies will be allowed to still provide that language access to non-English speakers, according to White House officials.

Republicans have led efforts in the past to label English as the country’s official language, with members of the House as recently as 2021 introducing legislation on it that failed.

Those who have opposed those efforts say that the country does not need an official language, pointing to the high numbers of people who speak it and to the country never having one, while also saying establishing one could promote discrimination against non-English speakers.

During his presidential campaign last year, Trump included non-English languages in his statements calling for stricter immigration policies.

“We have languages coming into our country. We don’t have one instructor in our entire nation that can speak that language,” he told a crowd of supporters in February 2024.

“It’s the craziest thing – they have languages that nobody in this country has ever heard of. It’s a very horrible thing,” he said.

And during the 2016 campaign he said, “This is a country where we speak English. It’s English. You have to speak English!”

When the US was founded, most residents spoke English and those writing the country’s constitution did not feel it was necessary to enshrine it as the official language and also did not want to alienate fellow new citizens who spoke German or other languages, according to most scholars.

The languages currently spoken the most in the US after English are Spanish, various Chinese languages, Tagolog, Vietnamese and Arabic, according to the Census Bureau. Another approximately one million people use American Sign Language, according to experts.

Approximately 180 countries around the world designate official national languages, and most countries recognise multiple official languages. However, several countries besides the United States do not have an official language, including the United Kingdom.

There are more than 30 US states which have designated English as the official language, while Alaska and Hawaii have also bestowed official status on several native languages.

Zadran 177, Omarzai five-wicket haul knock England out

The politicians hadn’t wanted this game to go ahead, but who could have wished to deny the scenes of raw euphoria that unfolded in Lahore, as Afghanistan completed the double they had set in motion at the 2023 World Cup and dumped England out of the Champions Trophy in a wildly undulating, anxious scramble for glory.

Eight runs was the margin when – with Mark Wood hobbled and all the recognised batters gone – Adil Rashid swung for the hills off the penultimate ball of the match and picked out the man of the hour, Ibrahim Zadran, whose take in front of the dug-out was completed with the same coolness with which he had compiled his exceptional knock of 177 from 146 balls – an innings that had simply been too good to fail.

Much the same could have been said for England’s main man of their 326-run chase, Joe Root,  whose 120 from 111 balls was his 17th in the ODI format but, remarkably, his first since the 2019 World Cup. Had he had a bit more support, and had he not been racked with cramp going into the final push, his run-a-ball tempo might have been more than sufficient to seize the day. Instead, he was undone by an effort ball from the indefatigable Azmatulllah Omarazi, whose five-wicket haul followed a priceless knock of 41 from 31 balls that had helped to pull his own team out of a tailspin.

Speaking straight afterwards, a shell-shocked Jos Buttler insisted he would not be making any “emotional” statements about his future as captain, but acknowledged the fundamental lack of confidence that had contributed to his team’s downfall.

After Afghanistan had opted to bat first, Jofra Archer’s three-wicket powerplay onslaught should by rights have settled the contest there and then. And yet, from 37 for 3 in the ninth over, Zadran and his captain Hashmatullah Shahidi focussed solely on survival until the point that their 103-run fourth-wicket stand had, almost imperceptibly, transformed itself into a platform for a thrillingly smooth acceleration.

Ultimately Afghanistan’s scorecard told the exact tale of their innings. Three single-figure scores at the top – for a combined total of 14 runs from 28 balls – then a trio of 40s, at ever increasing tempos, from Shahidi, Omarzai and the forty-something himself, Mohammad Nabi, whose 24-ball onslaught was a typically ageless display from a player who has been on every step of this Afghanistan journey, right from their exploratory tour of England as a de facto club side way back in 2006.

And then, underpinning it all, a performance of rare majesty from Zadran, whose sixth hundred in 35 ODI innings was not only the highest by an Afghan in the format, but the best in Champions Trophy history, trumping the 165 that Ben Duckett had posted against Australia in the previous fixture at Lahore.

It was a controlled explosion of an innings, and one of the most impressive ODI performances that can ever have been compiled. Zadran showed the tenacity to hang tough while England’s quicks were dominating the early exchanges, but after reaching his first fifty from 65 balls, he marched through to his hundred from 41 more, then clattered along at a near 200 strike-rate thereafter.

By the time he holed out to square leg at the start of the 50th over, Zadran had worked his way so smoothly through the gears that England had been left with scarcely any agency in their predicament. This was summed up when Wood, who had already spent 38 minutes off the field after his left knee gave way midway through his fourth over, was forced to leave the field once again, this time for good and with two overs of his allocation unused.

It had been a typically masochistic effort from Wood, whose willingness to bust a gut for the cause has never been in doubt. But England’s desperation to get him back into the fray there epitomised their threadbare resources. In a throwback to the sort of bit-part tactics that dominated ODI cricket in the 1980s and 1990s, Joe Root and Liam Livingstone had been charged with cobbling together 12 overs between them. But when, with nowhere else to turn, Root’s offspin was served up to the hard-swinging Nabi, two massive leg-side sixes ensued in a 23-run 47th over.

Not even Archer could stem the tide. He’d already been crashed for a six and three fours by Zadran, now in overdrive, who then launched a slower ball in Archer’s final over over long-on to seize Duckett’s record.

England’s target of 326 was daunting but not insurmountable, as they themselves had discovered on this same ground on Saturday night, when their own hefty total of 351 for 8 had been hunted down by Australia with 15 balls to spare. And yet, it was close to double the sort of target that England might at one stage had envisioned.

The scoreboard pressure was quickly brought to bear. Phil Salt started with a confident thump for four that telegraphed the trueness of the surface, but then lost his off bail as he tried to pull a skiddy length ball from Omarzai. And though Jamie Smith is undoubtedly a name for the future, it’s debatable whether he is the No.3 for the present. Certainly his dismissal was guileless in the extreme: a no-look gallop at the irrepressible Nabi, who skidded his offbreak through a touch quicker, to claim a wicket with the first ball of his spell for the third ODI in a row.

Where there was Root, there was hope, as he and Duckett set about rebuilding the innings much as they had done from an identical starting point against Australia. But after what ought to have been a costly drop from Shahidi at mid-off, when Duckett had 29, Rashid Khan stepped up with a skiddier full length, and sent his man on his way via DRS, just nine runs later.

The errors thereafter came with wearying inevitability. Harry Brook looked a million dollars for his first 20 balls, then got caught in two minds as he popped a tame return catch to Nabi for 25, whereupon Buttler – a player whose form seems so overwhelmingly dominated by his mindset – barely survived his first 12 runs before finally landing a slap for six to seemingly ignite his stay. But then, after one more slog-sweep for six off Nabi, Buttler was undone by Omarzai’s energetic lengths, as he spliced a pull straight to midwicket for 38.

Now it was all on Root. For the first 90-odd balls of his innings, England’s anchorman might as well have been on a serene stroll in Iqbal Park, with his innings scarcely deviating from a run-a-ball tempo. But then, after reaching his 50 from 50 and his hundred from 98, he felt the early onset of cramp, and with 58 still required from six overs, he inverted his stance into a Buttler-style ramp, and pinged his only six over the keeper’s head.

But it was too much to ask for Root to walk the innings home. He kept looking for the angles, and found one final sublime deflection for four through backward square, but at the precise moment at which Afghanistan’s own innings had gone into overdrive, he attempted a flick over deep third off another skidder Omarzai lifter, and was sent on his way via a scuff of the gloves to the keeper.

Jamie Overton seemed to have got the memo with the long-levered finish that he had so long promised but rarely delivered, but having brought the chase within reach with 32 from 28 balls, he attempted another takedown and found long-on with 17 still needed. And though Jofra Archer seemed to be riding his luck with an under-edge for four and a sprawling reprieve at deep cover, he was unable to close it out either. Thirteen from eight was needed when he flung his hands through an Omarzai slower ball, for Nabi in the deep to make no mistake.

Minutes later, it was all done and dusted. Afghanistan march onto what could have been another politically charged showdown with Australia, with a place in the semi-finals at stake, having already crushed the hopes of their new favourite tournament bunnies. Irrespective of the situation in their homeland, a remarkable set of players have once again epitomised the hope and escapism in tough times that only sport can provide.

Brief scores:
Afghanistan 325 for 7 in 50 overs (Ibrahim Zadran 177, Azmatullah Omarzai 41,Hashmatullah Shahidi 40, Mohammad Nabi 40;  Joffra Archer 3-64, Liam Livingstone 2-28) beat England 317 in 49.5 overs  (Ben Duckett 38, Harry Brook 25, Joe Root 120, Joss Buttler 38, Jamie Overton 32; Azmatullah Omarzai 5-58, Mohammad Nabi 2-57) by eight runs

Australia-South Africa match abandoned after relentless rain in Rawalpindi

The much-anticipated Champions Trophy match between Australia and South Africa in Rawalpindi was washed out without even a toss, never mind a ball being bowled, after persistent drizzle. The match was called off at 5.10pm local time, three hours and 10 minutes after the scheduled start of play at 2pm and two hours and 22 minutes before the cut off time for a 20-over game, 7.32pm, local time. This was due to be the teams’ first meeting at a Champions Trophy.

The result means if Australia and South Africa win their final group matches, against Afghanistan and England respectively, they will progress to the semi-finals. Tomorrow’s match between England and Afghanistan is a knockout, with the loser certain of exiting the competition. The winner will have to beat their next opposition to make it through to the semis. As a result, one of the matches between Australia and Afghanistan on Friday and South Africa and England on Saturday could be virtual quarter-finals. Both England and Afghanistan have to win both their matches to qualify for the final four.

With no XIs named for this encounter, South Africa kept their cards close to their chest on Heinrich Klaasen’s availability. He missed their opening match against Afghanistan with an elbow injury and now has three more days to recover before the game against England on Saturday.

This was due to be the first meeting between Australia and South Africa since the 2023 ODI World Cup semi-final, which Australia won and means that they continue to have the advantage over South Africa in ICC events. In nine matches, Australia have won four, South Africa three, there was a tie at the 1999 World Cup and now, their first washout. If the two sides are to meet again at this event, it will have to be in the final.

SC to hear petitions against Deshabandu’s appointment as IGP, in May

The Supreme Court yesterday (24) fixed for hearing nine Fundamental Rights (FR) violation petitions challenging the appointment of Deshabandu Tennakoon as the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

The petitions assert that the manner in which Tennakoon, who had previously served as the Senior DIG in charge of the Western Province, was appointed as the IGP during the Wickremesinghe-Rajapaksa government was unconstitutional.

The case was taken up before a five-member Supreme Court bench comprising Justices Preethi Padman Surasena, Yasantha Kodagoda, A.H.M.D. Nawaz, Shiran Gunaratne, and Achala Wengappuli.

Counsel for Tennakoon, President’s Counsel Romesh de Silva, presented evidence to the court that an interim injunction had been issued, preventing his client from performing duties as IGP.

The PC requested the court to expedite the hearing of this petition.

After considering the facts presented before the court, the five-member bench fixed the hearing of the relevant petitions for May 06, 07, and 08.

The petitioners include Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, the Young Journalists’ Association, and other parties.

They contend that the recommendations made by the Constitutional Council to appoint Tennakoon as IGP are unlawful.

The petitions seek a ruling that the decision to appoint Tennakoon as IGP, based on those recommendations, is against the law.

HNB Group records sustainable growth in 2024

Hatton National Bank PLC (HNB) posted robust overall performance in the year 2024, demonstrating marked improvement on all fronts. Group Profit After Tax (PAT) improved to Rs 44.8 Bn in 2024, up from Rs 23.6 Bn in 2023 while Bank’s PAT increased to Rs 41.3 Bn, compared to Rs 20.3 Bn in the previous year.

Commenting on the performance in 2024, Nihal Jayawardena, Chairman of HNB PLC stated that “with the improving economic landscape in 2024 providing the impetus for renewed business confidence and financial sector expansion, HNB leveraged its strong foundation to prove its leadership in the local banking industry. HNB’s solid capital position, strong liquidity, and digital-first strategy, enabled the Bank to respond swiftly to emerging opportunities for business expansion, culminating in to an exceptional financial performance in 2024. I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all our stakeholders for their continuous support and for the trust and confidence placed in us during good and bad times”.

Bank recorded an impressive 11.3% YoY growth in loans and advances during 2024. Despite the growth in loan book, interest income of the Bank experienced a YoY decline of 21.6%, primarily due to the gradual relaxation of monetary policy, which led to the average yields on loans and government securities dropping by nearly 45% in 2024 compared to 2023. However, the decrease in net interest income was moderated towards the latter part of the year, as the reduction in interest expenses outpaced the drop in income, owing to lower rates and the focus on driving CASA deposits.

Net fee and commission income of the Bank saw a notable YoY increase of 12.7% to Rs 17.8 Bn. Growth in fee income was driven primarily by the growth in transactional volumes across digital platforms and card services compensating for the drop in commission income from trade services. Trade commission dropped by over 25% YoY despite notable growth in trade volumes as the tariffs continued to adjust downwards reflecting higher foreign currency liquidity amongst the banks. The appreciation of the Sri Lankan rupee against the dollar resulted in an exchange loss of Rs 2.9 Bn.

The gradual improvement of the economic environment supported by the concerted efforts on rehabilitation and recovery efforts led to much improved asset quality. This resulted in positive movements in both stage 2 and stage 3 loans. Nevertheless, on a prudent basis the Bank recognised a total impairment of Rs 11.5 Bn on loans and receivables. Accordingly, the Bank’s Net Stage 3 ratio improved to 1.88% from 3.76% in the previous year, while the Stage 3 Provision Coverage ratio improved to 74.4%, from 57.5% in 2023.

Air Force Rugby on the path to its glorious past

From its humble beginnings in 1955 as the Royal Ceylon Air Force (RCyAF) Rugby team, Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) can be proud of its achievements in the field of Rugby in the country. Over the years SLAF has produced some top Rugby players in the caliber of Harry Goonetilleke, Jeff Ratnam, Charles Wijewardena, Viper Gunaratne, Ronald Rodrigo, Mohan Balasuriya, Tikiri Marambe, Nalin De Silva, Chandana Deepthi, Rex Anthony and Charith Seneviratne to name a few.

In 1956, RCyAF participated for the first time in the Inter Service Rugby Championship. The team lost to Navy (0 -3), however, beat the Army 14 -11. RCyAF won the Inter Services Rugby Tournament for the first time in 1957. 1965 was considered a memorable year for RCyAF Rugger as they won the “B” Division Rugby League and qualified to play in the “A” Division Rugby in 1966. Besides, they reached the finals of the Clifford Cup for the first time. The Clifford Cup final was played on 15 August 1965 at Langdon Place. RCyAF team lost to CR & FC 0 -11 and became the runners up.

In 1975 SLAF Rugby team created history, when they won both A’ Division and ‘B’ Division Rugby League Championships and becoming the first team to achieve this milestone. During the season, SLAF led by Squadron Leader Shanthi U. Mendis, were victorious in 12 out of 16 games. In the knockouts they entered the Clifford Cup final by beating Kandy SC led by Iswan Omar in the semis, in extra time. In the finals, SLAF lost to Army SC in a close match 3-4. Tissa Nanayakkara scored the solitary penalty for SLAF and for Army, it was Amaradasa who scored the winning try. Unfortunately for the Air Force, Nanayakkara missed a 35-meter penalty in front of the post with two minutes to the full time. Squadron Leader Tony Dirckze was the Command Rugby Officer whilst Squadron Leader Eddie Buell coached this champion outfit.

The finest moment of SLAF Rugby was the winning of Clifford Cup in 1986 under Corporal Lakshman Caldera beating a star-studded Police SC 10 -8. In the Quarter Finals, SLAF beat Navy SC 44 to10 and beat CH & FC 8-4 in the semi-final. A try in the extra time by Flying Officer Harsha Fernando helped Air Force SC to beat CH & FC after the scores stood at 4-all at full time. Air Force SC confronted the mighty Policemen in the final on 16 August 1986 and scored a sensational 10-8 win to clinch club rugby’s richest prize – the Clifford Cup. Second row forward Corporal Lofty Perera (jnr) scored the solitary try for the Airmen, while Corporal Tony Wimalasuriya fired across two penalties. Air Vice Marshal Brendon Sosa was the Chairman of SLAF Rugby at this historic occasion and the team was coached by late Air Vice Marshal Channa Gunaratne.

After a considerable period of mediocre performance, SLAF bounced back to reckoning when they reached the finals of Clifford Cup Rugby Tournament in 2019, after a lapse of 33 years. SC issues notices to Power Minister, others over FR petition on Rs 3bn loss from irregular tender

By A.J.A Abeynayake

The Supreme Court has issued notices to Minister of Power and Energy Kumara Jayakody and several other respondents in connection with a fundamental rights petition alleging that the government is set to incur a loss exceeding Rs. 3 billion due to irregularities in the awarding of a solar power plant tender in Siyambalanduwa, Athimale.

The petitioner claims that the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) had called for tenders to construct a 100-megawatt solar power plant, but the contract was awarded to a higher bidder, disregarding the lowest bid, resulting in a significant financial loss to the state. The Supreme Court issued the order on Thursday (20) and directed that notices be sent via courier service by 24 February, at the expense of the petitioner. The decision was delivered by a bench comprising Justices S. Thurairaja and Sampath B. Abeykoon.

According to the petition, a company that offered to supply electricity at USD 0.08 per kilowatt-hour was overlooked in favour of a bidder offering USD 0.122 per kilowatt-hour. The petitioner, Milinda Prasanna Madugalla, stated that he learned of the decision through media reports on 21 January 2025. The petition further alleges that the company awarded the contract later agreed to provide electricity at USD 0.08 per kilowatt-hour, but the government had also agreed to cover additional transmission facility costs over a ten-year period, significantly increasing expenditure.

Although the electricity supply cost was eventually reduced, the substantial increase in transmission charges has resulted in an estimated loss of Rs. 3.3 billion to the government. The petitioner argued that this financial burden would ultimately be borne by the public, making the respondents’ actions unlawful and a violation of fundamental rights.

During the hearing, Senior Counsel Suren Fernando, representing the petitioner, urged the court to treat the matter as urgent and allocate an early date for further proceedings. He informed the court that notices had already been issued to all respondents and relevant parties, along with supporting documents.

However, only a Deputy Solicitor General representing the Attorney General, listed as the 10th respondent, was present in court. The remaining nine respondents or their legal representatives failed to appear.

The Supreme Court has issued notices to Minister Kumara Jayakody, the Ceylon Electricity Board, Rividenavi (Pvt) Ltd, Lakdanavi Ltd, WinSports Ltd, Blue Circle (Pvt) Ltd, Athimale Plantations (Pvt) Ltd, Secretary to the Ministry of Power and Energy Prof. K.T.M. Udayanga Hemapala, and Cabinet Secretary W.M.D.L. Fernando.

Sri Lanka face Australia in Masters World Cup semi-final today

Sri Lanka Masters will lock horns with their Australian counterparts today in the semi-finals of the Over-50 Masters World Cup at the Mercantile Cricket Association grounds in Colombo – 7. The other semi-final will see England take on Pakistan across the wall at NCC. The grand final set to be played at the P. Sara Oval on Sunday.

Led by Shane Fernando and coached by Harsha de Silva, the Sri Lankan team has been a formidable presence in the tournament.

Organized by International Masters Cricket (IMC)—an Australia-based body dedicated to senior cricket—the body promotes four age group categories, ranging from Over-40s to Over-70s.

This year’s tournament has brought together 14 nations: Australia, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, England, Wales, UAE, Canada, USA and the West Indies and caters for over 50 players. Sri Lanka Masters have consistently participated across all age-group World Cups, underscoring their commitment to veterans’ cricket.

Previous editions of the tournament were hosted in Sydney and Cape Town. The Colombo leg commenced earlier this month, with the 14-team event broadcast live globally. In total, 56 matches were scheduled, with each innings comprising 45 overs.

Veterans’ cricket continues to gain popularity worldwide, promoting fitness, camaraderie, and a love for the game well beyond the professional years. This tournament not only offers intense competition but also serves as a testament to the sport’s enduring appeal. However, despite its significance, the Masters World Cup struggles with limited sponsorship, relying largely on self-funding and a restricted budget to stay afloat.

Sri Lanka squad:

Saman Jayantha, Rory Ingram, Indika de Saram, Ruvin Peiris (Vice-Captain), Russell Ingram, Shane Fernando (Captain), Upul Chandana, Suwanji Madanayake, Duminda Somaweera, Dilshan Amarasinghe, Ravi Perera, Dillon Fernandesz, Priyantha Rajapaksha, Chaminda Rajapaksha, Punyakantha Abeygunasekara, Renuka Nonis, Pujitha Uduwana, and Daminda Wijesekara.

Hundreds fired at aviation safety agency, union says

The Trump administration has begun firing hundreds of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) employees, according to the Professional Aviation Safety Specialists (PASS) union, weeks after a fatal mid-air plane collision in Washington DC.

Several hundreds of the agency’s probationary workers – who have generally been in their positions for less than a year – received the news via email late on Friday night, a statement from PASS’s head, Alex Spero said.

It is a part of a cost-cutting drive, driven by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (Doge)., that aims to drastically cut the federal workforce.

Spero called the firings “shameful” and said they “will increase the workload and place new responsibilities on a workforce that is already stretched thin”.

Two films and comments

is pleased to comment on two films, one Sri Lankan in Sinhala and the other American. She admits she is still to see the local film which is running in several cinemas to full audiences. It has been reviewed as outstanding; raved over by many; and already grossed the highest amount in Sri Lankan cinema history – Rs 100 million from date of release January 30 to February 14. This last: testimony to its popular appeal and acceptance as an outstanding cinema achievement. Director is Asoka Handagama and producer Subaskaran Allirajah for Lyca Productions. Swarna Mallawarachchi is said to give a stellar performance as Dr Manorani Saravanamuttu with an exceptional supporting cast including Sanath Gunatihilake, Sajitha Anthony, Rehan Amaratunge and others.

Titled Rani, the film concentrates on Manorani Saravanamuttu, mother of Richard de Zoysa, who was made to undergo the devastating trauma of seeing her son taken away, and then to identify the battered, tortured body washed ashore in Lunawa. Her commitment first was to identify the abductors or at least the leader of the group that came late at night to her home as media persons, and, on the pretext of speaking to the then sleeping Richard, took him away to murder him and drop him in the sea so his disappearance was complete.

Those times of fear

Cass was very much into following the trajectory of the political situation in the country as it was at that time. It was hot and turbulent with Ranasinghe Premadasa President and D B Wijetunge PM – admittedly ineffective against Premadasa. The country was gripped by fear; fear of an enemy and his cohorts who struck any outstanding person as being a threat to the Prez. And the LTTE, too, were active with raids south of the Vanni controlled by the Tigers.

Cass was working in the British Council when the news flashed that Richard had been tortured and killed and his body washed ashore. We cried as he had been much with BC; had performed in a Greek tragedy in the front garden of the BC. We knew instinctively who the perpetrator of the murder was and who executed through others the expressed displeasure that Richard de Zoysa was an irritant. The film, too, does not directly point a finger, merely indicates who he was. And thus the fear increased with frustration and deep sorrow at the loss of this brilliant young man brutally scythed at the age of 31.

We heard that Manorani identified the leader of the gang who came to her house that night, while watching TV on April 30. He was a security officer of the Prez. He was blown to bits with President Premadasa and others as the May Day rallies were commencing.

Another incident remembered with a shiver of apprehension passing down the spine was just prior to May Day. Prez Premadasa spoke at a public meeting in a near demented, almost strangled voice that people were pointing fingers of accusation at him for the murder of Lalith Athulathmudali.

Cass’ comment is to congratulate all involved in the film Rani for two reasons: exposition of a crime and a woman’s desperate sorrow that evolves to inner strength to help other women who had lost sons tragically. The second reason is that crimes have to be punished and that such crimes should not be forgotten. Reminders are good to keep people on their toes: on watch-out.

US movie

The other is the film of U S Vice President, J D Vance’s life story up to adulthood. He was born James Donald Bowman in 1984 but his parents divorced while he was a toddler and his name was changed to James David Vance after his mother – Beverly or Bev’s third marriage. He is first seen as a young boy living with his mother and sister in Middleton, Ohio, with loving grandparents close by. In swift flashbacks and forwards, his childhood life is juxtaposed with him as a graduate at Yale Law School and romance with Indian co-student Usha Bala Chilukuri.

Vance wrote his memoir in 2016 and titled it Hillbilly Elegy. The film was directed by Ron Howard with Vanessa Taylors writing the screen play. Amy Adams and Glen Close act as mother and grandmother; Gabriel Basso and Haley Bennett as boy and man Vance; and Freida Pinto as a very alike Usha.

Cass watched the film on Netflix and was stunned at how much the young boy had suffered, his mother being a druggie and moving from one man to another. In the car the young chap of around 10 years mentions: “Your latest boyfriend.” Bev gets mad and accelerates almost killing the two of them. He jumps out when she slows down and runs to a house for protection. The woman of the house phones the police but JD lies to them that nothing happened. Emotionally searing scenes show Bev’s addiction and trouble she causes her son. The film ends with his sister taking charge of Bev after her rehabilitation of many before, and Vance going back to New Haven, greeted by Usha and presenting himself for his first job interview.

An epilogue in the film reveals that JD and Usha married and have three children, moving to Ohio to be near his family. Bev was sober for six years. She was present at his swearing in as VP.

Comments

Much admired and applauded is Vice Prez JD Vance’s honesty in his memoir of his mother’s scandalous behaviour and drug addiction. That is, Cass presumes to say, Western honesty about personal history.

Now for a prediction. After all is said and done, Cassandra must live up to her Trojan ancestor Cassandra and call out an augury. She kept calling out: “I see blood!” True enough. Blood flowed as Agamemnon was murdered by his brother Menelaus and his wife Clytemnestra.

The present-day Cassandra’s cry is so different from her cries during many previous regimes in this Island. Now, she cries with contentment: “Peace it is. Peace be”, as she sees turmoil and wars all over the world and peace here. Also, the ability to look forward to rogues being caught, corruption slowly washed away and Sri Lanka restored to its resplendency.

Anura Bandaranaike was an exemplary and honourable leader

The 76th birthday of the Late Mr. Anura Bandaranaike fell on February 15

by Gamini Gunasekara

Mr Anura Bandaranaike, an Honours graduate in History of the University of London, was a formidable and prestigious leader who engaged himself in gentlemanly politics. He was never accused of any wrongdoing. From whatever angle one views his career, it would be fair to name him a man of unblemished character, in the fullness of the meaning of that phrase- a person who enjoyed the respect of everyone who lived in this country, be they political supporters or opponents and a leader of prestige here and abroad.

He was a rare person who had the good fortune to associate with foreign leaders at the highest level from his childhood and to enjoy their affection. It is no exaggeration to say that he was the only political leader in Sri Lanka who has had that fortune. From his childhood he was able to associate closely with the leaders of many countries such as India, Pakistan, Japan, China, America, Russia, England, Iraq, Iran, Egypt, the Middle-Eastern countries and countries of Europe. In consequence no other leader in Sri Lanka could claim the international contacts that he had.

At the same time the extreme facility with which he could handle the English language was always combined with his erudition. The knowledge that he possessed of a wide range of subjects including international politics, modern and ancient history, the world economy, classical Western literature, modern world trends etc etc is immense. He was second to none as a person who shone in debates both in Sinhala and English, in our legislature. His absence is acutely felt when one looks at the Parl iament today.

Anura Bandaranaike was born on 15th February15 , 1949 and passed away on March 16, 2008, saddening many a Sri Lankan heart. A large concourse of people converged on Horaglla Walawwa, where his body lay, in long queues from all corners of Sri Lanka, until the day of the funeral. I met that day even people who had come all the way from such far off places as Trincomalee. I recall that many such people standing in the queues were in tears. I attended that funeral along with Minister Sarath Amunugama.

I was Mr. Bandaranaike’s Media Secretary at the time. Dr. Amunugama and I associated closely with Mr. Anura Bandaranaike. Often when Mr. Bandaranaike wanted some assistance from Dr. Amunugama I acted asthe medium. When Dr. Amunugama wanted some assistance from Mr. Bandaranaike also I acted in similar fashion. My association with Mr. Bandaranaike was that close. It is the same with my association with Dr.Amunugama.

Mr. Anura Bandaranaike was a leader who always sincerely felt for the people. A significant feature of his character was that he never craved for wealth or power. We should remember that he donated to members of his household staff, portions of the commercially very valuable Horagolla Walawwe land which was his ancestral inheritance. It must also be placed on record that Anura Bandaranaike was a very distinguished Speaker of the Sri Lanka Parliament. He was also the youngest Leader of the Opposition in the Commonwealth at the time ( 1983- 1988).

The Late Gamini Dissanayake once told me that Mr Bandaranaike as the Leader of the Opposition played his role extremely competently, against a very strong Government. The degree dissertation of a female undergraduate of the Peradeniya University last year, was the role played by Mr. Anura Bandaranaike, as the Leader of the Opposition. She consulted me too on some matters. Mr Bandaranaike as the then youngest Speaker in the Commonwelth, conducted himself in international relations also preserving the prestige of Sri Lanka, by expressing his views fairly and fearlessly.

Anura wasthe only son of Prime Minister Solomon West Ridgeway Dias Bandararanaike and the world’s first female prime minister Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike. His family has a long history in our country’s political and social arenas. His grandfather was Sir Solomon Dias Bandaranaike, Mudaliyar of the Governor’s Gate. His mother’s father i.e. his maternal grand father was Rate Mahattaya Barnes Ratwatte Dissaswe.

At the time Anura was born his father S W R D Banadaranaike was the Minister of Health and Local Government who later became the fourth Prime Minister of Sri Lanka and was assassinated on September 26, 1959, when Anura was just 10 years old. His mother became the first woman Prime Minister of the world in July 1960 establishing a record, after assuming the leadership of the party, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, that her husband had founded.

Anura, after being appointed the leader of the youth wing of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, built up the SLFP youth wing into a formidable force in all districts including in the North and East. At that time he was the most popular youth leader in Sri Lanka. He contested Nuwara Eeliya- Maskeliya multi member

constituency as the SLFP nominee in the 1977 parliamentary general elections. While the SLFP suffered an ignominious defeat in that election, we must remember that Anura secured the Second MP position relegating Mr. Thondaman to third place.

Anura has told me that he devoted only two weeks at Nuwara Eliya-Maskeliya at that campaign. The rest of the time he was campaigning for the party all over the country. He secured more than 49,000 votes in the Nuwara Eliya – Maskeliya multi-member constituency. Gamini Dissanayake was elected the First member. These two were friends. I was also fortunate enough to be able to associate closely with Mr. Gamini Dissanayake.

Truly, the country has now been orphaned by the loss of such political leaders. Most people are unaware that Mr. Anura Banadaranaike delivered lectures on South Asian politics in foreign universities. He often quoted writers from Shakespeare and T S Eliot in his lectures. He inherited that talent from his father. People doing politics today should read the biographies of leaders like this. The lessons one can learn from such reading is immense.

Japan extends grant aid to two humanitarian projects in North

Japanese Ambassador Akio Isomata on Tuesday signed two grant contracts under the “Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP)” with two NGOs, Humanitarian Development Organization (HDO) and Nuffield School for Deaf and Blind, during his first trip to the Northern Province, a press release issued by the Embassy said.

The signing took place in the presence of Northern Province Governor, Nagalingam Vethanayahan, at the latter’s office in Jaffna.

The Government of Japan has allocated USD 173,659 (approx. Rs. 50 million) for these projects to enhance medical and educational facilities in the Northern Province. Supporting development in conflict-affected areas remains a priority in Japan’s official development assistance to Sri Lanka, particularly in promoting mitigation of vulnerabilities.

HDO is implementing the “Project for the Construction of a Medical Ward for Palai Divisional Hospital”, which will improve healthcare services in the Kilinochchi District by constructing a new inpatient ward at Palai Divisional Hospital. Hambantota Intl Port expands bunkering with new HSFO facilities

Hambantota International Port (HIP) marked a significant milestone in January 2025, by successfully integrating High Sulphur Fuel Oil (HSFO) into its range of bunkering services. Now offering a complete suite of marine fuels, including Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) and Marine Gas Oil (MGO/MDO), said a release.

It said: This development strengthens Sri Lanka’s position in the global maritime landscape, allowing HIP to cater to a broader range of vessels navigating one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes.

“We are pleased to announce the full operational launch of our HSFO bunkering facility, which marks a significant step in realising our vision of becoming a leading global maritime hub,” said Wilson Qu, CEO of Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG). “With our expanding range of services and growing reputation for operational excellence, HIP is positioning as a crucial player in the future of maritime trade and fuel supply. This expansion not only broadens the services we offer but also strengthens Sri Lanka’s position as a critical maritime player in the Indian Ocean region.”

The newly operational HSFO facility features a 6,000 cubic meter storage capacity, split across two dedicated tanks in the port’s oil tank farm, along with a specialised pumping system capable of transferring 400 metric tons per hour. A streamlined pipeline links the tanks directly to HIP’s oil jetties, ensuring fast, efficient fuel delivery. The facility has advanced monitoring and remote-control systems, guaranteeing precise, safe operations.  It will provide significant convenience to ship owners with vessels using scrubbers, who opt for HFSO for its cost-effective, advanced scrubbing systems while meeting IMO 2020 sulfur cap regulations.

The port which now houses Sri Lanka’s first shore-based storage tank farm with a dedicated facility for HSFO bunkering, marked the achievement with the successful discharge of 5,000 metric tons of HSFO and 20,000 metric tons of VLSFO from the vessel Grand Ace 10, from the 30th January to 01st February. The operation unveiled HIP’s new HSFO bunkering infrastructure, setting the stage for increased fuel diversity in the region.

HIP’s strategic location along one of the busiest maritime routes in the world, provides vessels with a vital refueling stop as they traverse the shipping lanes between Europe and Asia. The addition of HSFO to HIP’s fuel offering allows the port to cater to a broader spectrum of vessels, from large tankers to smaller cargo ships, that require different grades of fuel for their operations.

The port’s collaboration with Sinopec, a global leader in energy, ensures the delivery of high-quality, reliable marine fuels.  Furthermore, HIP’s operational excellence is certified by Lloyd’s Register (LR), a globally recognised authority in maritime classification. In 2022, HIP received its Fitness for Service (FSS) certification, validating its infrastructure and commitment to safety and compliance.

As the maritime industry continues to evolve, Hambantota International Port remains focused on innovation, infrastructure, and quality. This latest development highlights HIP’s commitment to meeting the ever-changing needs of the global shipping industry, enhancing its competitiveness, and contributing to the overall economic development of Sri Lanka.

Lankan woman secures asylum in New Zealand citing ex-girlfriend’s death threats

A bisexual woman has been granted New Zealand asylum because she is afraid of her soldier ex-girlfriend in Sri Lanka who has threatened to shoot her mum and dog, says a report published by the NZ Herald yesterday.

The woman also fears being sent home and forced into a second arranged marriage because of her sexuality, she told a recent Immigration and Protection Tribunal hearing.

She told the hearing she began a clandestine teenage romance with her ex-girlfriend until her mum discovered them kissing in 2017.

Her “disgusted” parents then forced her into an arranged marriage with a man.

However, her girlfriend refused to accept their relationship had ended.

And – after growing up and joining the Sri Lankan army – the ex-girlfriend in 2021 forced her way into the woman’s parents’ house at gunpoint, accompanied by three army officers.

When told the woman was not home, the ex-girlfriend, only identified as A.A., became angry.

“A.A. pointed a gun at the mother’s chest and threatened to kill her … and also threatened to kill the family dog,” the tribunal was told.

The woman had earlier migrated to New Zealand, partly to escape her ex-girlfriend and partly to study, before seeking asylum.

Her first application for asylum was rejected and so she appealed to the Immigration and Protection Tribunal for another hearing.

The tribunal presiding member Larissa Wakim said that in hearing the appeal she had to decide whether the woman’s story was credible and whether the woman faced genuine risk of harm if sent back to Sri Lanka.

Wakim heard how the woman, only identified as J.F., grew up in a rural Sri Lankan town in the 1990s where she met A.A. when they were 11 years old.

The woman said she had been a bookworm, timid and never talked back.

A.A., on the other hand, was “confident, athletic and decisive”. A.A. was “always happy to argue” and could become angry and controlling over who J.F. was friends with.

Their relationship became intimate at 16, with J.F. later going on to study computer programming and A.A. joining the Sri Lankan army.

They continued their relationship but kept it a secret because they worried it was considered culturally unacceptable in their community.

But in 2017, J.F.’s mum saw them kissing.

Her mum also gave evidence to the tribunal and recounted how at that moment “she felt disgusted, sad, betrayed and worried because, in Sri Lanka, it was unacceptable and illegal to have lesbian relationships”.

The parents forced J.F. to stop seeing A.A., made her change her phone number and destroyed most of the photos of the girls together.

The parents next decided to “resolve the problem” by marrying their daughter to a man her father knew through his work, the mum told the tribunal.

But soon after A.A. drove to the family’s home and demanded J.F. be given to her, the mum said.

“A.A. behaved like a man, scolding the parents, and threatening to kill them and [J.F.],” the mum said.

A.A. then began to do slow drive-bys of the family home in her army vehicle.

Everyone became afraid of her, with J.F.’s parents moving to a rented house in a new town in 2018 to try to get away, but A.A. quickly tracked them down.

In 2021, the family celebrated the birthday of J.F’s brother at the rented home.

But A.A. showed up in her army vehicle with three army friends, thinking J.F. would be there.

Demanding to be let in, A.A. said she would shoot the home’s gate down if it wasn’t opened.

Once inside, she searched everywhere but couldn’t find J.F. Becoming enraged she threatened to shoot J.F. and her mum.

J.F.’s mum told the tribunal the moment was terrifying and that she still takes fright at the memory of it.

J.F. wasn’t there at the time because she had migrated to New Zealand in 2018 at the suggestion of the family of her husband, identified as B.B.

She said she had endured abuse and non-consensual sex as part of the marriage and agreed to go ahead to New Zealand on a student visa.

However, B.B. was not able to secure a visa to New Zealand to follow her.

By 2021, B.B. sought a divorce. He had also been hiding from A.A. and said that living apart and being unable to go to New Zealand had become too much.

In New Zealand, J.F. had troubles with her studies and dropped out. However, she now worked six days a week in a retail job.

She told the tribunal she sent one-quarter of her week’s earnings to help support her family because her dad had not had substantive work since 2017.

A medical expert also presented evidence that J.F. had bad anxiety and a major depressive disorder because of her circumstances.

J.F.’s mum also expressed fears for her daughter in Sri Lanka saying she would be vulnerable without a husband and may find it hard to get a job.

Ultimately, Wakim decided J.F.’s account had been credible, due to her giving consistent and straightforward evidence ever since first making her refugee claim.

Her story was also corroborated by other people and a medical expert, Wakim said.

Wakim believed A.A. posed a threat to J.F. and that the Sri Lankan police had already been shown as unwilling to protect J.F.’s family.

She also believed J.F. was at real risk of being forced into another arranged marriage with a man due to her personality of being unable to resist her parents’ demands.

And once in such a relationship she would be more vulnerable to abuse such as non-consensual sex, Wakim said.

She said J.F. had a right not to be forced to conceal her bisexuality or be forced into refraining from having intimate relationships to avoid persecution. The tribunal consequently found J.F. is a refugee and entitled to protection in New Zealand.

Uber Eats 2024 Cravings Report: Sri Lankans love sugar, spice and everything nice!

We dug into the details of what Sri Lankans ordered on Uber Eats last year, and one thing stood out— a love for bold flavours. From “make it spicy,” to “extra spicy,” spice dominated order instructions, proving once again that Sri Lankans love their daiyya (spice) . But it wasn’t all about fiery flavours – Sri Lankans had a serious sweet tooth, with Pancakes, Chocolate Doughnuts, and Chocolate Eclairs leading dessert orders in the hundreds of thousands.

The Uber Eats Cravings Report 2024, a snapshot of the country’s favorite cravings and binge-worthy dishes, uncovered some interesting trends. The country’s long-standing love for Short Eats remained strong, with Chicken Roll, Fish Patty, and Fish Bun topping snack-time favourites.

Rice reigned supreme, with four of the five most-ordered dishes being rice-based, reinforcing Sri Lanka’s unwavering love for rice.

The 2024 Food Menu Royalty:

Chicken Fried Rice

Chicken Biryani

Nasi Goreng

Mixed Fried Rice

Chicken Pizza

In a nation known for its tea exports, coffee came on top—Iced Coffee held its stop as the most-ordered drink on Uber Eats in 2024, overtaking Milk Tea once again. Rounding out the top five beverages were Pepsi, Iced Milo, 7UP, and Milo Milk Tea.

Grocery trends reflected kitchen essentials and everyday kitchen staples. Eggs, Big Onions, and Tomatoes, leading shopping lists on the app.

The 2024 Grocery Menu Royalty:

Big Onions

Eggs

Tomatoes

Fresh Milk

Sandwich Bread

True to Uber Eats’ ‘Get Almost, Almost Anything’ promise, non-food orders were a hit, with personal hygiene products and cleaning supplies topping the list.

The 2024 ‘Get Almost, Almost Anything’ Winners

Tissues

Sanitary Pads

Dishwash Liquid

Toilet Paper

Detergent

Sri Lankans showed their generosity, tipping delivery partners over LKR 100,000,000 last year. The highest tips were given on Mother’s Day (May 12); Father’s Day (June 16), and Valentine’s Day (February 14) – proving that consumers made sure delivery partners felt extra special on special days.

And of course, no Cravings Report is complete without some unforgettable delivery instructions. Some gems from 2024:

“Can you please put some eggs? I’m bulking 😭 I’ve been ordering regularly”

“You guys know how I like it—NO onions, tomatoes, and cucumbers. Just whipped curd with extra chili powder.”

“I MISSED YOU A LOT! I TRIED ORDERING SO MANY TIMES! DON’T GO MISSING AGAIN !”

Six years in, Uber Eats continues to shape Sri Lanka’s food culture – whether you like it spicy, sweet, or with extra eggs. No matter what your cravings are, we’ll keep delivering your favorites, just the way you love them.

Don’t betray ‘baiyas’ who voted you into power for lack of better alternative

A helpful warning to NPP:

By Rohana R. Wasala

Vinasha kale vipareetha buddhi is an ancient Sanskrit proverb. It means: “When a person’s doom approaches, their intellectual power becomes reversed/disoriented or turns against them (causing their destruction)”. This pithy saying seems to be as much applicable to incumbent president Anura Kumara Dissanayake as it once was to former president Mahinda Rajapaksa.   This was brought to my mind by president Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s absurd  treatment of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa in his keynote address at a public rally dubbed  ‘Suhada Hamuwa’ (Friendly Meeting)  held by the ruling JVP/NPP alliance at Katukurunda in Kalutara on January 19, 2025.

President Dissanayake stated that he won’t hesitate to remove altogether even the already  reduced security detail of sixty policemen recently left for Mahinda Rajapaksa to retain, if the latter didn’t stop whining about it! President Dissanayake also suggested that the former president could be asked to vacate his high rent (according to AKD) official residence (at Wijerama) made available to him rent-free and might be required to accept a monthly allowance that is equivalent to one third of his monthly pension to use for renting an alternative residence.

AKD’s obvious tyranny in this instance sounds laughable because he was a member of the committee appointed by the Yahapalanaya (presumably, in 2015) that approved the allocation of that house to Mahinda Rajapaksa as former president. This piece of information was revealed by Ranil Wickremasinghe who addressed a meeting of leaders of opposition parties at Kollupitiya on February 1 as reported by the Sinhala language Lanka Leader website the same evening.

According to media reports, Mahinda Rajapaksa’s lawyers, on his behalf, filed a fundamental rights (FR) petition with the Supreme Court, Colombo on January 25, 2025 against the current Malimawa (JVP/NPP) government’s alleged decision to curtail the security that he is legally entitled to as a former president. Downgrading the security of war winning Mahinda Rajapaksa, apparently  on a whim, is likely to be seen by the sensible public as an indication that the ruling alliance is already veering off its promised course of ‘clean’ governance. Remember that, just as the SLPP led by the Rajapaksas fought the elections of 2019 and 2020 on the single platform of One Country One Law (aimed at preserving the unitary state and communal harmony), the JVP/NPP alliance organised its presidential and parliamentary election campaigns of 2024 around the exclusive theme of eliminating corruption, punishing the corrupt and ushering in a clean Sri Lanka, while rescuing the country from its current economically bankrupt state.

Owing to his having failed to skilfully utilise the tremendous opportunities that the democratic electoral victories of 2010 and 2019/20 offered him for pursuing the nationalist cause that he claimed to champion to its ultimate triumph in the face of internal and external challenges Mahinda Rajapaksa has tragically lost his original charisma and heroic stature as a senior politician. He is virtually a spent force. But he is not your average past president. If president Anura Kumara Dissanayake is determined to enhance his own image by harassing Mahinda Rajapaksa, it would not take long for him to realise that he is gravely mistaken. Opinions are being voiced that AKD has succeeded in giving MR a new lease of life in politics!.

Among the five surviving former presidents, Mahinda Rajapaksa is the most vulnerable to possible assassination attempts. Had it not been for his courageous political leadership, the mindless separatist terror campaign that had ravaged Sri Lanka for over thirty years (1975-2009) would not have been defeated. The crushing of terrorism earned him many enemies who are waiting to settle old scores with him. However, the grateful citizens, young and old, can either remember as a direct experience or as something they have learned from older adults or from books, the indescribable suffering that the terrorists were inflicting on all Sri Lankans irrespective of their diverse ethnicities, religious beliefs, cultural practices and political ideologies.

They won’t forget how deeply relieved they felt when, at long last, they found themselves safe from the threat of mental and physical agonies, torments and tortures that they had experienced during that dark period. Ordinary Sri Lankans have a special niche in their hearts for Mahinda Rajapaksa despite the many allegations critics raise against him which remain to be properly investigated..

Besides, Mahinda Rajapaksa has earned the envy as well as the anger of Western imperialists and their local lackeys by being one of the only two post-independence Sri Lankan political leaders who brought well deserved recognition and distinction to our beloved Motherland and refurbished her image in the world as an independent sovereign nation through their unique service; the other is the late Mrs Sirimavo Ratwatte Dias Bandaranaike. The United Left Front (a coalition of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and some left parties) led by Sirimavo Bandaranaike  swept the parliamentary polls in 1970 with a two thirds majority.

The ULF government, under her leadership, proclaimed the country a republic in 1972, severing residual colonial ties (to the expired British empire) which had survived the dominion type of incomplete independence of 1948. How the JVP unintentionally served as a catalyst for the introduction of the republican constitution is a different story.

The Punarudaya (Renaissance) that the present day leader of the JVP (none other than AKD) is championing seems to be a reversal of the genuine national revival or renaissance that Sirimavo Bandaranaike was instrumental in bringing about in 1972.   Mahinda Rajapaksa made history by ending the armed Tamil separatist threat to unitary Sri Lanka in 2009. Both leaders had to endure stiff external and internal resistance, which unfortunately persists to this day.

Allegations of wrongdoing levelled against the once iconic Mahinda Rajapaksa are a different matter. They should be looked into in the relevant context where worse wrongdoers are lurking in the shadows. But as suspects or defendants, they should all be considered innocent until proven guilty by a court of law. Anura Kumara Dissanayake, whom many have already begun to consider a sort of arrogant upstart, should not betray the trust that the people (the majority of them are baiyas/nationalists) placed in him by electing him to power for lack of a better alternative leader at this hour of unprecedented existential crisis that they are facing. AKD should not forget that the baiyas (nationalists/patriots who come from all the communities) form the majority both in the government and the opposition. They want him to succeed as president, for the sake of the nation/country by outperforming his predecessors including Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The subject of security due to a former president of the republic is beyond dispute as legal experts tell us. It is an inviolable right of a person who has served the nation in that most exalted position, a right  established by an Act of Parliament. Security provided for a former president after due assessment of relevant factors cannot be scaled down or withdrawn completely at the behest of a political rival who has suddenly been catapulted to power by volatile circumstances. The Presidents’ Entitlements Act No. 4 of 1986 clearly stipulates the terms relating to the provision of an ‘appropriate’ residence for a former president.

It is no surprise that Mahinda Rajapaksa, as the president who succeeded in putting a decisive end to three decades of armed terrorism,  remains a constant target of potential assassins. He has also earned the wrath of racists and religious extremists (powerful in both the local and global political spaces); they know (though they don’t acknowledge it publicly) MR as the leader of inclusive pan-Sri Lankan nationalism, which they oppose deliberately misconstruing and misrepresenting it as Sinhalese Buddhist racism or chauvinism.

Despite the chorus of uninformed approval of and impulsive support for AKD’s hateful denunciation of MR heard from the immature brainwashed sections of the JVP’s young novitiate membership,  numerous critics have already pointed out that AKD is wrong in his behaviour towards the former president and that he (AKD) is most likely in violation of the Sri Lankan Constitution in this regard.

To be continued
