Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena yesterday informed Parliament that the Supreme Court had determined that the Economic Transformation Bill contained clauses which were inconsistent with the Constitution and some of them needed to be passed with a two-thirds majority and with approval from people in a referendum.
The Court has, however, said that if the clauses in question are amended or repealed, the Bill can be passed with a simple majority in Parliament.
The Supreme Court determination has been made in response to petitions filed against it as per Article 121 (i) of the Constitution.
The Speaker also announced that the Supreme Court had informed him that it had received a petition filed on 01.07.2024 under Article 121(1) of the Constitution in respect of the Bill titled ‘Reciprocal Recognition, Registration and Enforcement of Foreign Judgments’.
