SJB Matale District MP Rohini Kumari Kaviratne, speaking in Parliament, yesterday, called upon the government to explain why it had not promoted Solicitor General Ayesha Jinasena to the post of Attorney General, which had remained vacant for weeks.
Raising a point of order, Kaviratne said that SG Jinasena had all the qualifications and an impeccable service record and is next in line to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of the former Attorney General. “Instead of giving her the due promotion, the government has appointed Parinda Ranasinghe as acting Attorney General. This amounts to discrimination. This discrimination takes place within two weeks of this House passing the Women Empowerment Bill. Although we pass the laws they are not enacted. So, I ask the government whether these laws are passed here as only an eyewash to show the world that we care about women. In action, the government is not ready to give women their deserving place. Overlooking Jinasena of her promotion is an example for this,” Kaviratne said.
The government did not answer the question raised by Kaviratne at the time of commencing sittings soon after Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena’s announcements to the House.
Several minutes before Kaviratne’s question Speaker Abeywardena announced in Parliament that in terms of the provisions of Article 79 of the Constitution of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, he had endorsed the certificates on the Bills titled “Women Empowerment” and “Sri Lanka National Commission for the UNESCO”, on 02 July 2024.
