It is obvious that the local government election will not be held on April 25, says Executive Director of People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL), Rohana Hettiarachchi.
“This is a very disheartening situation. PAFFREL stood firmly that the election should be held on March 09, as planned. We didn’t think that the government would openly try to suppress one of the most basic democratic rights of the people,” he said.
Hettiarachchi said that the tenure of 340 local councils will end on March 19 and then they will be controlled by bureaucrats.
“This is what happened to the provincial councils, too. Now they are ruled by bureaucrats and the people have no say in how they are run,” he said. (RK)
