Sri Lanka faces a mounting environmental crisis, importing approximately 500,000 metric tons of plastic-related material each year, with less than 10% of this waste being recycled. Last week, this urgent issue was underscored when the country’s largest environmental advocacy network, ZeroPlastic Movement—supported by over 9,000 volunteers—announced its partnership with Mark and Comm Ltd, the leading Colombo-based PR agency, as its Strategic Communications Partner.
The vast majority of this plastic ends up in landfills or the ocean, posing severe threats to the nation’s ecology and wildlife. The unchecked disposal of plastic waste is causing significant harm to marine and terrestrial environments, disrupting ecosystems, and endangering various animal species.
The partnership agreement was formalized at Uga Residence, with ZeroPlastic Movement Founder Nishshanka De Silva, Mark and Comm Ltd Managing Director Thanzyl Thajudeen, and Director Chamanie Nanayakkara in attendance.
ZeroPlastic Movement focuses on combating plastic pollution through education and advocacy. It was named National Winner 2023 for its ZeroPlastic River Strainer project.

Thanzyl Thajudeen, Managing Director of Mark and Comm Ltd, who also sits on the expert panel of ZeroPlastic Movement as consultant overseeing public affairs, PR and communications, said: ‘‘We have always embraced social change for the good and this is reflected in all our efforts.
