The Cabinet has approved amendments to increase penalties under the Employment of Women, Young Persons and Children Act No. 47 of 1956.
The Act prohibits the employment of children under 16 and restricts those aged 16 to 18 from working in hazardous jobs that endanger their health, safety, or morals.
At present, offenders face a maximum fine of Rs. 10,000 or up to 12 months’ imprisonment, or both, in addition to compensation payable to the affected child.
The Labour Ministry said the existing penalty was no longer adequate and the revisions would bring the law in line with International Labour Organization conventions 138 and 182, both ratified by Sri Lanka.
